Comments
From the autumn of 1878 onwards, Claude Monet lived with his girlfriend Alice Hoschedé, her children and his sons in a house near the Seine in the commune of Vétheuil, in the Val-d'Oise department of Île-de-France, around sixty kilometres north-west of Paris.
On a sunny winter's day in 1881, bare trees and bushes protrude from the water of one of the flooded Moisson islands. Across the river, the village of Lavacourt is depicted with its houses and the village church. With his nuanced use of delicate brushstrokes and a graduated palette of blue, green, white and pink, Monet created fascinating effects of colour and light on the surface of the water and in the slightly cloudy sky. Monet was fascinated by the natural phenomena of the Seine. The atmospheric effect of the painting, with its vibrancy of colour including colourful shadows cast by the tree trunks, and the high degree of abstraction in the composition testify to Monet's modern and avant-garde approach to painting. His landscapes capture the changing seasons and vegetation in a unique way. Monet’s "impressions" of his surroundings, which were to give their name to an entire art movement, are impressive testimony to his mastery.
