Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) Attributed: Untitled (Chanel No. 5), Acrylic and watercolor on paper, signed lower right and on reverse, framed. The reverse also bears the collector's stamp from Arthur Tooth Gallery, London, England and an inventory inscription.
Warhol was obsessed with celebrity, consumer culture, and mechanical (re)production. He made a variety of paintings, prints and posters from some of the most iconic images of the 20th century, based on original logos, trademarks, and advertisements, including the Chanel No. 5 bottle. The Chanel Classic Bottle, No. 5 Chanel and The Most Treasured Name in Perfume are registered trademarks of Chanel, Inc.
Drawing from his advertising background, Andy Warhol understood the impact that Chanel No. 5 had on the beauty market. The perfume was the first conceived by the illustrious Coco Chanel and was indicative of the chic, minimalist aesthetic of the brand. The Chanel bottle speaks for itself, and to this day remains the epitome of femininity, high fashion, and glamor, ideas that enchanted Warhol and greatly influenced his work. Warhol would include this composition in his “AD” series, where it would cement itself as one of the most iconic works of its generation.
